about us
The Buttermarket was built in 1835. Situated in the beautiful historic town of Shrewsbury. Standing at the terminus of the Shropshire Union Canal, it catered for the flow of fresh market produce brought into Shrewsbury by Canal boat. The canal would have travelled from this point to Jackfield, Ironbridge. The railway came into Shrewsbury in the 1850's and they took over the ownership of The Buttermarket. It was used then as a warehouse and over the years slowly fell into disrepair. As the building was grade 2 listed it was thought best not to demolish it
The Buttermarket today is not only country famous but world famous with people coming along for the great music and events, and the historic and architectural value of the building.
Many people ask how we can be so successfully for so many years as an independently owned venue. The answer is simple... we move with the times, we appreciate good music and the office door is always open, with a warm welcome, you will always find a friendly face open to ideas and suggestions.
